Dysautonomia is a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for regulating important bodily functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, digestion, breathing and so on. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (aka POTS) is a type of dysautonomia that is characterized by an abnormal increase in heart rate and other symptoms. As someone who has had dysautonomia (genetic) my entire life it can be troubling to deal with. Moreover, not receiving a medical diagnosis until age 36 made it even more difficult as I was left untreated for many, many years. After the diagnosis the cardiologist said they were unsure how to help me.

That is when I began to pull from my Clinical Herbalism/Clinical Aromatherapy skills and other years of experience and began to delve deep into functional and mind-body medicine. Which I am glad I did.  Fast forward now, while I do still have the condition, I have some days where I am doing well, and of course like any chronic condition have days where I struggle, thus I also have a service dog.

Recently I have been layering in hypnosis and breathwork as a part of my regime and it has been very helpful. Hypnosis has been used as a treatment option for POTS and other dysautonomia conditions, as well as other chronic illnesses like pain conditions, fibromyalgia, cancer, insomnia, and MORE  (which I also see clients for) as well.

Understanding Dysautonomia POTS

Dysautonomia is a condition in which the autonomic nervous system does not function properly. POTS can cause a wide range of symptoms, including lightheadedness, fainting, palpitations, migraines, gastric issues, bladder issues, fatigue, shaky hands, sleep issues, brain fog and much more! ┬áThe symptoms of POTS can be debilitating and can greatly affect a person’s quality of life and make it very difficult for those to hold traditional types of job, or in some case many patients are disabled, however in some cases this can be difficult to get.

Hypnosis (along with herbs and aromatherapy) as a Treatment Option

Hypnosis helps people achieve a trance-like state of focused attention where often people feel relaxed and the clinical gives suggestions that can benefit the chronically ill clients. Working with someone who has a deep understanding of POTS is ESSENTIAL!

During hypnosis, a person is more receptive to suggestions and can use their imagination to help overcome various problems, including chronic pain, anxiety, panic attacks, headaches, and much more!

Clinical hypnosis has been used as a treatment option for dysautonomia and POTS. The goal of hypnosis in this context is to help the patient learn how to regulate their autonomic nervous system through hypnosis and other relaxation and other techniques. Often self-hypnosis along with other mind-body medicine tools are taught and clients meet with the clinical over a period of several visits for maximum results.

Research has shown that hypnosis can be effective in reducing the symptoms of dysautonomia and POTS. One study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that hypnosis was effective in reducing the symptoms of POTS in a group of patients. The researchers found that hypnosis helped to improve heart rate variability and reduced the symptoms of lightheadedness, fatigue, and brain fog.

Another study published in the American Journal of hypnosis found that hypnosis was effective in reducing the symptoms of dysautonomia in a group of patients. The researchers found that hypnosis helped to reduce the symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, and palpitations.

Conclusion

Dysautonomia and POTS are debilitating conditions that can greatly affect a person’s quality of life. Hypnosis, particularly when layer in with herbalism and aromatherapy may support better days for these conditions. Hypnosis helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and reduce the symptoms of dysautonomia and POTS.
