Exploring the Differences Between Hypnosis and Ketamine-Assisted Therapy: A Focus on Safety

Introduction

In recent years, alternative therapies have gained popularity as individuals seek effective and innovative ways to address mental health concerns. Two such approaches, hypnosis and ketamine-assisted therapy, have garnered attention for their potential in treating various mental health conditions. While both methods aim to promote healing, they differ significantly in their mechanisms, effects, and safety profiles. In this blog, I will delve into the distinctions between hypnosis and ketamine-assisted therapy, with a particular focus on the safety.

Understanding Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that involves inducing a trance-like state in which an individual becomes highly focused and open to suggestions. Contrary to popular misconceptions, hypnosis is not a form of mind control; rather, it leverages heightened suggestibility to promote positive changes in behavior, thoughts, or feelings.

Safety of Hypnosis

One of the primary advantages of hypnosis is its safety profile. When conducted by a trained and ethical practitioner, hypnosis is generally considered safe for the majority of individuals. It is a non-invasive method that does not involve the use of drugs or substances, making it suitable for people who may be sensitive or have concerns about pharmaceutical interventions.

Furthermore, hypnosis is a collaborative process between the individual and the practitioner, emphasizing consent and empowerment. The hypnotized person retains full control over their actions and cannot be coerced into doing anything against their will. The trance-like state induced during hypnosis is a natural state of heightened focus, similar to being engrossed in a book or daydreaming. Approved in the AMA in the 1950’s hypnosis is safe, gentle and drug free!

Understanding Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

Ketamine-assisted therapy, on the other hand, involves the use of the dissociative anesthetic ketamine in a controlled therapeutic setting. Initially recognized for its anesthetic properties, ketamine has gained attention for its potential in treating depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Unlike hypnosis, ketamine-assisted therapy requires the administration of a pharmaceutical substance.

Safety Considerations for Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

While ketamine-assisted therapy has shown promise in certain cases, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential risks associated with the use of a pharmacological agent. Ketamine, when administered improperly or in uncontrolled environments, may lead to adverse effects such as increased blood pressure, hallucinations, and disorientation. Additionally, there is a potential for abuse, as ketamine is a controlled substance.

The Importance of Professional Oversight

In both hypnosis and ketamine-assisted therapy, the key to safety lies in the competence and professionalism of the practitioner. Certified hypnotherapists adhere to ethical standards, ensuring a safe and collaborative environment. Similarly, ketamine-assisted therapy should only be conducted by licensed medical professionals in controlled settings to mitigate potential risks.

Conclusion

In the realm of alternative therapies, hypnosis and ketamine-assisted therapy offer unique approaches to address mental health concerns however hypnosis is generally considered safer due to its non-invasive nature and absence of pharmaceutical substances. While this is not a to discredit ketamine-assisted therapy. It does requires careful consideration of potential risks associated with drug administration and may have possible side-effects or contraindications for some people.

Hypnosis for Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Poster Accepted to ASCH in Blog Format)

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder, C-PTSD, is an extreme stress-based disorder that stems from intimate partner violence. Typically, C-PTSD it is treated with conventional medicine like psychotherapy and medications. In many cases, those therapies are not beneficial. Additionally, sometimes they may have adverse effects. Thus, further types of treatments may be sought.

My academic research focuses on complex PTSD and how hypnosis within the context of the mind-body medicine model and positive psychology coaching can support post-traumatic growth and recovery from C-PTSD.

Complex PTSD is an extreme stress syndrome that can be caused by long-term trauma like intimate partner violence (Walker, 2013). Complex posttraumatic stress disorder develops out of response to danger, perceived or actual (Crittenden & Heller, 2017). The body develops a response of either keeping the information on the danger (association) or dismissing the information on the danger (dissociation) (Crittenden & Heller, 2017).

When the person closest to the individual is the threat, which is often the case, the body develops shortcut reflex responses to deal with the trauma (Crittenden & Heller, 2017).

These shortcuts and responses over time develop into C-PTSD (Crittenden & Heller, 2017). Women are twice as likely as men to get C-PTSD, yet less likely to get diagnosed or often misdiagnosed (Simmons, 2007). The trauma, happening over time, causes the person to enter survival mode.

Survival mode can mean that any event may be perceived as a threat (Elkins, 2017). Because the victims are always in self-defense mode, the nervous system rarely gets a break. The continued burden on the nervous system can lead to mental, physical, and emotional issues over time; thus, close relationships are often threatened (Lehrer et al., 2008; Elkins, 2017).

Hypnosis is an altered, focused, receptive state of attentiveness that leads to suggestibility (Yapko, 2019; Hammond, 1998). Hypnosis focuses on the client’s innate abilities to uncover solutions and overcome challenges (Yapko, 2019).

Research within the hypnosis field has revealed that hypnosis, in the context of ego-state therapy and exposure therapy, can be supportive to people with complex trauma or C-PTSD (Elkins, 2017).

Because hypnosis is considered a part of positive psychology, it can also help clients, particularly with other mind-body medicine tools, deal with trauma (Moss, 2003; Yapko, 2019).

These tools can help support posttraumatic growth (PTG). Posttraumatic growth can be achieved through neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to adapt and change (Elkins, 2017).

Hypnosis can help support women with C-PTSD through ego- strengthening, safety and stabilization, and enhanced relaxation (Elkins, 2017; Foa et al., 2009).

Additionally using ego-state therapy within the hypnosis context can be benefit in working through traumatic material. Furthermore and visualization within the hypnosis setting therapy can also be beneficial to support postrraumatic growth and aid in goal setting (Elkins, 2017). Visualization can be particularly beneficial for those who experience disassociation, to anchor the here and now (Poon, 2009). Visualization or pictures can be the building block for words, and thus language for self reflection (Poon, 2009).

Alizamar et al. (2018) conducted single-subject research (SSR) method study to determine the effect of hypnosis in reducing stress-based conditions like C-PTSD. The authors used the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) to set up measurement. The authors’ found that stress levels decreased in the group given hypnosis. Thus, hypnosis can be very beneficial for stress-based disorders like C-PTSD.

Clinicians who work through traumatic stimuli with client should do so with care and consideration (Elkins, 2017). Additionally, working with trauma requires sensitivity and should come from a trauma informed clinician (Yapko, 2019).

Ego-state therapy is a form of hypno-analytic therapy that views the mind as polypsychic (Elkins, 2017, p.147). Parts of the ego, or personality parts, are formed during development and can be affected during complex trauma (Elkins, 2017). Working with ego state therapy can be supportive to those suffering with C-PTSD by using these stages of ego-state therapy include but are not limited to:

• Psychoeducation
• Also referred to as emotional literacy; this can help normalize

feelings and help clients to feel heard. It can help prepare them for

further aspects of ego-state therapy.

  • Safety and Stabilization

• Reducing the symptoms by suggestions of safety and stabilization can help the client. Additionally supporting client with setting boundaries with others is a part of safety and stabilizations.

  • Assessing the Trauma Material

• A clinician may or may not choose to assess the trauma material

depending on the clients needs and where they are in the safety and stabilization process. However, when this is done it can break the trauma bonds and allow healing to take place.

• Reassociation and Integration
• Reassociate of the emotional experiences and the reintegration of

these experiences is attempted at this stage of the therapy.

The brain that has experienced long term trauma is wired to see danger in everyday situations (Sapolsky, 2004). Understanding and recognizing signs of the trauma and understanding neurobiology can help the clinician develop a plan to help the brain adapt and change. This adaptation is referred to as neuroplasticity and can lead to the patient experiencing post-traumatic growth (Krippner et al., 2012).

Hypnosis can help patients discover their strengths, build self- esteem, find safety and stabilization methods (Elkins, 2017).

Additionally, hypnosis can help increase positive automatic thoughts, support subjective well-being, and lead to posttraumatic growth (Yapko, 2019). These aspects of hypnosis can support the recovery of C-PTSD. Choosing a trained practitioner in hypnosis and the mind-body medicine model who understands trauma, can minimize complications.

Introduction:

Embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship is akin to walking a tightrope, especially for solopreneurs who bear the weight of their ventures single-handedly. While the entrepreneurial spirit thrives on resilience and determination, it’s essential to recognize the potential toll it can take on one’s health. Allostatic load, a term coined to describe the cumulative wear and tear on the body due to chronic stress, is a phenomenon that can affect solopreneurs early on if not managed properly. In this blog, we’ll explore the early signs of allostatic load in solopreneurs and offer insights on how to navigate this challenging terrain.

  1. Chronic Fatigue and Exhaustion: One of the earliest signs of allostatic load in solopreneurs is persistent fatigue that goes beyond the normal weariness associated with hard work. Constantly juggling various aspects of a business can lead to chronic exhaustion, impacting not only productivity but also the overall well-being of the solopreneur.
  2. Sleep Disturbances: Altered sleep patterns, insomnia, or restless nights are common indicators of mounting stress. Solopreneurs may find themselves lying awake at night, their minds racing with thoughts about business challenges, strategies, and the never-ending to-do list. Empowering Recovery: The Synergy of Aromatherapy and Hypnosis for Women Healing from Narcissistic Abuse

Introduction:

The journey of healing from narcissistic abuse can be a challenging and intricate process, especially for women who have endured the emotional and psychological toll of such relationships for numerous years. In recent years, complementary therapies like aromatherapy and hypnosis have gained recognition for their potential in aiding recovery, quicker. When used synergistically, these two approaches create a powerful support system, offering women a holistic path to healing and reclaiming their lives.

Understanding Narcissistic Abuse:

Narcissistic abuse is characterized by manipulative behaviors, emotional exploitation, and a consistent pattern of undermining the victim’s self-worth. Women who have experienced narcissistic abuse often find themselves grappling with anxiety, depression, and a diminished sense of self. Breaking free from the mental and emotional chains of such abuse requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both the conscious and subconscious aspects of the mind. In my private practice I work with plant-based therapy, and other methods to speed recovery!

Life stressors, whether they be work-related, personal, or societal, can significantly exacerbate the challenges faced by those with invisible chronic illnesses. Invisible chronic illnesses are health conditions that aren’t immediately apparent to others. Unmasking Narcissism: The Deceptive Dance of Accusations

Introduction:

In relationships, few patterns are as destructive as the narcissistic cycle of projection, which can often make you question every aspect of your life. Picture this: a toxic individual or narcissist, consumed by an insatiable need for validation, starts accusing you and telling others that you are doing very misdeeds they themselves commit—lying, cheating, addictive habits, stealing, and so on. This toxic game harms the victims and causes family members, friends, and even colleagues to turn against them, leaving the victim often alone, defeated, and crushed by the deceit. These indicious and hard-to-prove actions perpetuate a web of deceit that can be challenging to escape, I know! I tried to unalive myself due to horrific psychological, financial, and other types of abuse. However, with mind-body medicine tools, I am now happier and more alive than EVER!

Understanding the Narcissistic Cycle:

Narcissists are master manipulators, adept at projecting their own flaws onto others. When caught in their web of deception, they resort to a strategy known as “gaslighting,” where they deny the truth and make their victims question their own reality, again it’s devastating. This cycle of projection allows narcissists to deflect attention from their own wrongdoing, creating confusion and chaos in their wake.

The Accusations:

Lies, cheating, addiction, and stealing are often at the heart of narcissistic behavior. They accuse their partners of dishonesty, infidelity, or financial misconduct, all while engaging in these very acts behind closed doors. The goal is not only to divert attention but also to establish control and dominance over their victims and turn the children and family members, yes even friends against them!

The Toll on Victims:

The impact on those targeted by narcissistic accusations is profound. Victims may experience self-doubt, anxiety, and a fractured sense of reality. The constant barrage of false accusations can erode their self-esteem, leaving them vulnerable to further manipulation. It’s crucial to recognize the signs of narcissistic behavior and break free from the cycle before irreversible damage occurs.

  1. Educate Yourself and Others: Knowledge is power. Learn about narcissistic personality disorder and share this blog with friends, family, and colleagues. Awareness is the first step in breaking the cycle.
  2. Seek Support: If you suspect you are a victim of narcissistic behavior, seek support. In my book, my Course and with my private clients I teach them to regain their confidence and calm and wake up feeling excited about their life again, after the devastating effects of narcissistic abuse. I use easy evidence-based tools I discovered in my doctoral program and that I used myself to heal from the abuse! Breaking free from the cycle often requires external guidance and validation.
  3. Establish Boundaries: Narcissists thrive on breaking down boundaries. Establish clear and firm boundaries to protect yourself from their manipulative tactics. This may involve limiting contact, going no contact, going gray rock if you have to have contact, seeking legal intervention, or ending the relationship altogether.
  4. Self-Compassion Practices: Mind-body medicine encourages self-compassion, allowing individuals to treat themselves with the same kindness they would offer a friend facing similar challenges. Self-compassion practices, such as loving-kindness meditation, which I teach all of my clients and talk about in my group, can help victims counteract the negative impact of narcissistic accusations on their self-esteem.

Conclusion:

Breaking free from the clutches of a narcissist is difficult in some case, particularly if you have been in it for years! It requires awareness and support. By shedding light on the deceptiveness, it is my hope to educate and empower individuals to recognize the signs, seek help, and reclaim their confidence and calm. Strategies for Thriving After Narcissistic Family Relationships

Introduction:

Family, often synonymous with love and support, can become a breeding ground for pain when a member displays narcissistic traits. Discarding loved ones for the new supply usually involves a callous severance of ties, that adds a layer of heartbreak to an already toxic relationship. In this blog, we will explore the characteristics of narcissistic behavior, delve into the reasons behind family discard, and discuss the transformative power of hypnosis and trauma-informed coaching in the healing journey.

Understanding Narcissism:

Narcissism, a personality disorder characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and a lack of empathy, can wreak havoc on familial bonds. Within the family unit, these traits disrupt the natural ebb and flow of love, trust, and understanding.

The Narcissistic Discard:

Being involved with a toxic individual like a narcissist is a gut-wrenching experience, marked by emotional, sexual, financial, and other forms of abuse. Couple that with the abrupt termination of connections between the narcissist and the family, who are unsuspecting, can make it worse.

In many cases, it begins with emotional withdrawal because they have already gotten a new supply. Then it later escalates to cutoffs or physical distancing. The reasons behind this discard are often complex, involving threats to the narcissist’s ego as the narcissist has the desire for control or a search for new sources of admiration. They move on rather quickly (typically have a relationship before the other one ends) to termination relationships with family members like children, spouses, grandchildren, and so on.

Reasons Behind Family Discard:
